Investigative Division
The Moorhead Police Department Investigative Division employs 10 individuals made up of two General Investigators, four Narcotics Investigators, two Juvenile Investigators, one Lieutenant as Division Commander and an Administrative Assistant. The unit is divided into three main sections:

General Investigations - Two investigators work in this area on adult crimes against persons, property, and financial crimes (i.e. homicide, robbery, sexual assault, assault, burglary, theft, embezzlement/fraud). One of the two investigators is also a trained Computer Forensics Examiner who works on identity theft, narcotics, and child pornography cases. Several cases have been picked up by Federal prosecutors due to the quality of work being performed by our in-house expert. The Moorhead Police Department is a member of ICAC (Internet Crimes Against Children)

Narcotics Investigations - Four investigators work on various narcotics cases. One is assigned to the Red River Valley Task Force that is co-located with the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) and has contributing members from the DEA, ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), IRS (Internal Revenue Service) Minnesota BCA (Bureau of Criminal Apprehension), Fargo Police, West Fargo Police, Cass, Clay, and Becker County Sheriff's Departments. The Task Force works on larger Federal conspiracy and drug-trafficking cases that occur in northern Minnesota and eastern North Dakota. One investigator is assigned to work gang/narcotics intelligence and is also associated with the Red River Valley Task Force. Two other investigators work local narcotics trafficking cases. Because fighting the methamphetamine epidemic is such a huge part of law enforcement's duties, the Minnesota County Attorneys Association has launched a website that provides information and resources on this topic. www.revealingmeth.com is intended to help individuals, families and communities take action against the widespread and costly problem of methamphetamine addiction in our state. This website offers information on such topics as: The effects of meth on a user's body; meth's impact on Minnesota; personal stories of recovering addicts; actions to combat the epidemic; and how to order the association's new meth documentary.

Juvenile Investigations - Two investigators work on child physical and sexual abuse, child pornography, and other child protection cases as well as vulnerable adult abuse and financial exploitation cases. Both investigators are highly trained in forensic child interviewing designed to extract information necessary for successful prosecutions without leading the subject. In 2005, the Moorhead Police Department joined with other area law enforcement agencies, medical personnel, counselors, and social services in establishing the Red River Child Advocacy Center. The Center was formed for the purpose of working with children that are victims of crime. The Center creates a safe, neutral atmosphere for children. It eliminates bringing a child into the police department for an interview, to the hospital for an exam, or to social services or counseling services. The Center is located in downtown Fargo and is accessible 24/7/365.

The Investigative Division is responsible for notifying the public regarding predatory offenders and conducting these administrative background checks:

Liquor License
Car Dealership License
Handgun Permit
Daycare License

Even though each investigator has an area of specialty, they all share on-call time and often are called in to assist each other or work cases outside their area of emphasis. This exposure in their work experiences lead to highly trained, well-rounded investigators and are all part of a motivated team.
