On May 1, 2000, the Red River Valley Regional SWAT team was formed. It is probably the first
multi-jurisdictional team that has ever crossed state lines. The entire team is composed of
Officers from Moorhead Police Department, Fargo Police Department, Clay County Sheriff's
Department, Cass County Sheriff's Department, and West Fargo Police Department. In addition,
the FM Ambulance Service provides three Paramedics, Meritcare Hospital provides an ER doctor,
and Life Flight provides three Paramedics. The initial team totaled 27 members.
In addition, we have recently added eight team negotiators to the SWAT team. As the team has
become more established and become a more used resource for area law enforcement, we have
needed to expand our support staff.
This first year alone, the SWAT team was utilized in 11 high-risk situations. These incidents
ranged from apprehending homicide suspects to executing higher risk narcotic search warrants.
